Sun Yat-Sen University (http://www.sysu.edu.cn/2012/en/index.htm) was founded in 1924 by Dr.Sun Yat-Sen (also called Sun Zhongshan), a great democratic revolutionaryleader of the 20th century. SYSU is located in Guangzhou, GuangdongProvince, China, an area neighboring Hong Kong and Macao. SYSU is acomprehensive multi-disciplinary university, including the humanities, socialsciences, natural sciences, technical sciences, medical sciences, pharmacology, and management sciences with more than 82,000 students on four campuses inGuangzhou and Zhuhai. SYSU is a prestigious institution for training high-leveltalents, conducting scientific research, providing services to society, inheritingcultural traditions, and promoting international collaboration and exchangewith many top universities in the world. The School of Environmental Scienceand Engineering (SESE) (http://sese.sysu.edu.cn/) aims to promote studies onenvironmental science and technology, environmental microbiology, and socialscience related to air, water and soil environments. SESE has more than 94 facultymembers including 20 professors and 27 associate professors.

Faculty positions in the School of Environmental Science andEngineering The school seeksapplications for multiple faculty positions in the broad fields ofEnvironmental Science and Environmental Engineering. The research topics mayinclude soil environmental research (soil environment contaminationremediation, soil and ground water environment, and soil and carbon/nitrogencycle in the ecosystem), water environmental research (water environment modeling, water environmental engineering (including industrial wastewater, domesticwastewater, and drinking water)), air environmental research (atmosphericchemistry and air pollution control engineering), environmental management, environmental chemistry and materials, environmental toxicity and health, and environmentalmicrobiology.

Candidatesshould have completed Ph.D. studies in relevant fields and have a strongpublication record. Successful applicants are also expected to teach pertinentcourses at both graduate and undergraduate levels in English or Chinese. TheSYSU offers an attractive remuneration package. Salary and other benefits willbe commensurate with the candidates' qualifications and experience.

Applicationsshould include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching and researchstatements (1-2 pages), and the names, email addresses, and phone numbers ofthree professional referees. Applicants should not ask their referees to sendletters of reference at the time of application. Letters will be requesteddirectly by the SYSU. Interestedindividuals for those positions should send a letter of application to Dr. RongliangQiu (eesqrl@mail.sysu.edu.cn, the dean of theschool).

Facultypositions in the Environmental Microbiome Research CenterThe School of Environmental Science andEngineering also seeks faculty and research scientists positions in environmentalmicrobiome studies to support its newly established Environmental MicrobiomeResearch Center (EMRC) at. EMRC aims to understand the role of microorganismsin the environment, and engineer them to improve environmental health; EMRC hasthree core laboratories: Data Science Laboratory, Environmental MicrobialEcology Laboratory, and Systems Microbiology Laboratory. For each laboratory, afull or associate professor (as the laboratory leader) and up to five researchscientists, lecturers, or postdocs will be internationally recruited. Thesepositions are part of microbiome initiative at SYSU with the ultimate goal to promotemulti-disciplinary microbiome education and research nationally andinternationally. Salary will behighly competitive and commensurate with qualifications.

Data Science Laboratory (DSL). DSLfocuses on data generation (e.g., sequencing), dataprocessing and analysis, and data modelling as well as application anddevelopment of bioinformatic and genomic tools. DSL candidates are expected to have the following major responsibilities:(i) generate sequence, microarray, proteomic, and metabolic data using high throughput technologies for microbiomestudies; (ii) use various existing advancedmathematical, statistical and computational tools for microbiome data analysis(e.g., networking, machine learning, modeling, prediction); and (iii) develop novel mathematical, statistical and computational frameworks and approaches for facilitating microbiomedata analysis, interpretation and modelling.

Environmental Microbial Ecology Laboratory (EMEL). EMEL aims to study microbial ecology theoriesand analysis of microbial communities from very complex, natural communities, simplifiedenrichments, to defined communities. EMEL candidatesare expected to perform the following major tasks: (i) design novel experiments to prove/disprove important ecologicaltheories via synthetic ecology approaches; (ii) develop novel frameworks to address fundamental scientific questions inmicrobial ecology; and (iii) analyzethe diversity, composition, structure, function, network, dynamics and evolutionof microbial communities from air, water and soil environments using highthroughput technologies (e.g., sequencing, microarray, single cell genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics) coupled with traditional techniques (e.g., isolation, stable isotope probing).

Systems Microbiology Laboratory (SML). SML iscentered on isolation, enrichment and engineering of functional microorganismsand microbial communities, and understanding of gene function, regulation andnetwork. SML candidates are expected to perform the following major tasks: (i) isolate and characterize functionalmicroorganisms and microbial communities; (ii)understand gene function, regulation, and network of functional microorganisms usingnovel genome editing tools (e.g., CRISPR Cas9); and (iii) optimize functional microorganisms and communities towards improvementsof human health, plant productivity, ecology safety, and environment quality.

Each candidate should have a PhD inenvironmental microbiology, bioinformatics, microbial ecology, systems biology, environmental science/engineering, computing/information science, or relateddisciplines (e.g., microbiology, hydrobiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, ecology, mathematics, statistics, computer/information science) with substantialknowledge and experience in microbiome related studies, including bioinformatics, metagenomics, environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, metabolic engineering, genome editing, and systems biology. Also, all candidates are expected to train students, visitors, and postdocs formicrobiome experiments and data analysis, and coordinate microbiome educationand research within EMRC and across the SYSU campuses. In addition, forprofessor and associate professor positions, candidates should have extensiveexperience in teaching, research and service. Finally, high quality publicationsand recent grants are the key factors for those competitive positions, and alsoimportant are excellent oral and written communication skills and ademonstrated ability to interact and collaborate with other scientists andstudents. An application for multiple positions is possible, but a decisionwill be made by the research committee based on the most relevant position andrequirements by each position.

ApplicationProcess.  Confidentialreview of applications will begin August 15, 2016 and continue until those positionsare filled.  Interested individuals areinvited to send (i) a letter ofapplication describing how their capabilities fit the applied position, (ii) a full curriculum vitae, (iii) a description of research interestsand accomplishments, (iv) contactinformation of at least three references, and (v) for professor and associate positions, a description ofteaching philosophy and experience. Interestedindividuals for those positions should send a letter of application to Drs. RongliangQiu (eesqrl@mail.sysu.edu.cn,the search committee chair), Beicheng Xia (xiabch@mail.sysu.edu.cn), and ZhiliHe (zhili.he@ou.edu).Inquiriesregarding EMRC positions should be directed to Dr. Zhili He(email: zhili.he@ou.edu;phone: 405-837-3798).
