报告摘要:

In spite of the tremendous technological progress during the last century, nearly one billion people around the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and other independent non-profit organizations, don’t have access to safe drinking water. Furthermore, these are also the people who make less than $2 per day and live in rural environments. Understandably, the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of the United Nations to provide potable water is far from its target goal and the claims are often questionable. The migration of poor people toward large cities is often driven by the lack of potable water and its adverse impact on health and local economy.

During the last 20 years, with my students and co-workers I have worked in different countries in Asia and Africa to provide sustainable water supply to rural people. Our finding is that innovative technology alone cannot resolve such a crisis. Synergy through social entrepreneurship and creative micro-financing at the water interface holds the key to success. Employment generation through economic growth is the single most important factor to sustain safe water supply to resource-poor people around the world. Several cases will be presented where the complementary relationship between science, innovation and a meaningful business model made a difference.

Arup K. SenGupta教授简介:

SenGupta教授自1994年起在理海大学土木与环境学院担任教授,2014年成为美国国家研究院(NAI 院士。他是离子交换技术和饮用水除砷方面的专家,是“道南膜效应理论”的提出者和奠基人,在过去的20年间始终致力于水质安全保障技术,并着力改善亚洲和 非洲等贫困国家的饮用水水质。他发明的除砷技术在印度和肯尼亚地区广泛应用,解决了几百万农村及偏远地区的饮用水安全问题。

        SenGupta教授曾担任Environ. Sci. & Tech., Water Research等多个知名期刊主编及副主编,拥有近十个美国国家发明专利,发表包含Environ. Sci. & Tech.Water Research等有影响力的环境学术期刊论文近百篇,其中几篇经典文章引用数超过1000次。因为他的杰出成就,SenGupta教授获得了多项国际大 奖,包括:2012年国际环境奖,2009年美国ACS斯特莱斯(Astellas)研究创新奖、美国科技创新奖和美国化学学会劳伦斯奖,2008年获美 国土木学会研究贡献奖和美国化工协会突出贡献奖,2007年获得美国国家工程院银奖并于同年获得希尔曼杰出教育奖,等等。
