BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH of Prof. Song-You Hong
Song-You Hong started research in the mid 1980’s with Prof. Dong-Kyou Lee at Seoul National University, Seoul, on numerical simulations of heavy rainfall using the MM4. He then continued modeling research in areas of physical parameterizations in the NCEP operational global and regional models in collaboration with Drs. Hua-Lu Pan, Henry Juang, Eugenia Kalnay, Ants Leetmaa, and many others at NCEP. Dr. Hong lead the development of MRF PBL, prognostic cloud microphysics schemes, and the revisions in cumulus parameterization, gravity-wave drag schemes. In the late 1990’s he developed the new operational NCEP coupled seasonal forecast model in collaboration with Drs. Masao Kanamitsu and Henry Juang. After moving to Yonsei University in 2000 summer, Dr. Hong started working with Drs. Jimy Dudhia and Shuhua Chen for developing the WRF model physics. Also, a new global model system with a Double-Fourier Spectral dynamical core and advanced physical processes has been developed. In collaboration with the WRF development team at NCAR, he developed the YSU PBL and WSM and WDM microphysics schemes, and continues to give efforts on the revision of the existing schemes and the development of a new physics package. As of September 2009, Dr. Hong is in charge of two PBL schemes, one mountain-induced gravity wave drag scheme, and seven cloud microphysics schemes in the WRF model. He published about 60 SCI papers in various areas in atmospheric sciences.
