Abstract: The involvement of high-valent iron-oxo intermediates in biological, environmental, and industrial processes is of current interest. Ferrate(VI) (FeVIO4-), ferrate(V) (FeVO43-, Fe(V)), and Fe(IV) have a high oxidizing power and upon decomposition form a non-toxic byproduct, Fe(III). Ferrates can also be potential oxidants in the so-called “green” treatment of polluted waters. Ferrate(VI) efficiently oxidizes emerging contaminants, estrogens and pharmaceuticals. Sulfonamides, trimethoprim, and tetracycline transformed to products that are expected to be less toxic. Disinfection tests of sodium ferrate(VI) on spore-forming bacteria showed that aerobic spore-formers are reduced up to 3-log units while sulfite-reducing clostridia are effectively killed by ferrate(VI). Both bacteria are resistant to chlorination. The multi-functional properties of Fe(VI) can thus be utilized in a single dose for recycling and reuse of water and wastewater. A combination of ferrate(VI) and TiO2 photocatalyst has the potential to enhance the oxidation of contaminants. The potential role of ferrate as oxidant, coagulant, and disinfectant in water and wastewater treatment processes will be presented.
