Abstract

Air pollution due to high concentrations of ozone and particulate matter, continues to be a pervasive problem worldwide and thus a central focus of current air quality management and climate mitigation efforts for many countries.  Three-dimensional (3-D) air quality/climate models provide a powerful tool to replicate observed air pollution, develop win-win emission control strategies for both pressing issues, and examine the effectiveness of such strategies.   This seminar will feature regional air quality modeling activities at NCSU. Several case studies over China and the U.S. using representative regional air quality models such as the U.S. EPA Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system and the Weather Research and Forecasting Model with Chemistry (WRF/Chem) will be presented.  These case studies will be used to illustrate current models’ capabilities in reproducing observations, simulating aerosol-climate feedbacks, and developing integrated emission control strategies for air pollution control and climate change mitigation.  Future research challenges and directions will also be discussed.
